Safeguarding Biodiversity

BACKGROUND

The GRALEX company is co-owner of a 300-hectare quarrying site in Leffe, which is surrounded by a natural protected area. This area, which represents 30 hectares, has been recently proposed for the Natura 2000 network. Operating conditions nearby the Natura 2000 designated area have not been clarified yet by the authorities. This creates uncertainty regarding the site's conservation objectives, its exact delimitations and the nearby protection area. GRALEX shares the objectives of Natura 2000, and is committed to contributing to nature and biodiversity conservation. The company has integrated sustainable development principles in its management philosophy and in the way it operates its quarries.

ACTION

In Leffe, GRALEX has addressed uncertainties in a pro-active way: the management of the site is now ensured by the asbl (association sans but lucratif - a non profit organisation), RNOB Réserves Naturelles, an environmental non-governmental organisation which employs specialists in nature conservation management.

RESULTS

GRALEX has lent a number of grounds to RNOB Réserves Naturelles experts for a 50-year period so that they can properly work on the conservation of the natural habitats. Restored quarrying sites often create new habitats for endangered species in the Wallonia region, and plays a key role in the overall conservation of biodiversity. This demonstrates a genuine compatibility between quarrying activities and nature conservation. Finding a well-balanced compromise between economic activities and nature conservation is both possible and necessary. This is achieved by dialogue, transparency and mutual understanding between all of the stakeholders involved. The successful partnership between GRALEX and RNOB Réserves Naturelles in Leffe is a good example of a simple and mutually-beneficial solution.
