BACKGROUND The
GRALEX company is co-owner of a 300-hectare quarrying site in Leffe, which
is surrounded by a natural protected area. This area, which represents
30 hectares, has
In Leffe, GRALEX has addressed uncertainties in a pro-active way: the management of the site is now ensured by the asbl (association sans but lucratif - a non profit organisation), RNOB Réserves Naturelles, an environmental non-governmental organisation which employs specialists in nature conservation management.
GRALEX
has lent a number of grounds to RNOB Réserves Naturelles experts
for a 50-year period so that they can properly work on the conservation
of the natural habitats. Restored quarrying sites often create new habitats
for endangered species in the Wallonia region, and plays a key role in
the overall conservation of biodiversity. This demonstrates a genuine
compatibility between quarrying activities and nature conservation. Finding
a well-balanced compromise between economic activities and nature conservation
is both possible and necessary. This is achieved by dialogue, transparency
and mutual understanding between all of the stakeholders involved. The
successful partnership between GRALEX and RNOB Réserves Naturelles
in Leffe is a good example of a simple and mutually-beneficial solution.
